Handling a Surprise Pregnancy
First off: You have what it takes to be a great dad.
Once she's pregnant, everything changes. What happens next may be her decision, but most women care a lot where their partner is coming from. Here are some tips for making the best choice for both of you—together:
-
Find out if she's pregnant. We offer free, confidential pregnancy tests. Offer to help her schedule an ultrasound appointment and go with her. An ultrasound confirms the pregnancy and tells how far along the baby is, which affects your options.
-
Learn about your options. She's carrying the baby, but now you're both parents. You deserve a clear understanding of how abortion, adoption, or parenting can affect both of you. Even though abortion may seem like an easy way out if you weren't planning for her to get pregnant, it is also a permanent decision that often has negative effects on the relationship and both partners.
-
Listen to her thoughts and feelings. What's she excited about? What's she scared of?
-
Tell her what you're thinking and feeling. If you're not sure how to start, say something like "when you told me your period was late, I felt ____, because ____. Now that I've had a little time to think about it, and hear what you're saying, I feel ____, because ____." Be honest. If you want to keep the baby, tell her so.
-
Let her know how important she is to you and that you are there for her. Don't pressure her about the pregnancy or withdraw. Instead, commit to exploring your options together and getting whatever help you need to make your relationship better than ever.
-
Talk with your support system. You have what it takes to be a great dad, and you don't have to do it alone. We are here for you!
