What is a Limited Obstetric Ultrasound?
A limited obstetric ultrasound, also called a viability ultrasound or dating ultrasound, is a scan that
-
Confirms that there is a baby in the uterus (intrauterine pregnancy)
-
Measures how far along you are (gestational age)
-
Confirms the baby's heartbeat (cardiac activity)
All ultrasound exams done at the Goldendale Pregnancy Resource Center are performed and interpreted by licensed medical professionals.
Is it really free?
Yes. All our services are free. You do not need to provide insurance.
How should I prepare for my ultrasound?
Come to your appointment on time with a full bladder. Please bring your photo ID if you have it. If you do not have photo ID, you can still schedule an appointment.
What should I expect from my appointment?
Typically, you can expect your ultrasound experience to go like this:
-
We will welcome you and give you some forms to fill out.
-
You will have an opportunity to talk with one of our client advocates about your plans for the pregnancy and any support needs you may have.
-
If you do not have a signed proof of pregnancy, you will receive an onsite pregnancy test.
-
A medical professional will meet with you to go over your health history and make sure you are eligible to be scanned. She will also check your blood pressure and other vital signs.
-
The medical professional will perform the ultrasound.
-
We will give you a courtesy call with the results after the radiologist reviews them.
Can I bring a guest?
Yes! For your privacy, we ask to begin the appointment with just you. However, you can invite your guest to come in later.
I'm planning to take the abortion pill. Do I still need an ultrasound?
There are several reasons that is important to get an ultrasound before taking the abortion pill (medical abortion).
-
Get an accurate gestational age. Irregularities in cycle length, variability in the timing of ovulation, and how well you remember the date of your last period can make online calculators inaccurate, increasing the risk of serious side effects from medical abortion. With an ultrasound, you can know accurately how far along you are, which may impact the type of abortion procedures available to you.
-
Risk of ectopic pregnancy. Ectopic pregnancy is a potentially life-threatening condition where a pregnancy grows outside the uterus. A pregnancy test will still come out positive, but the abortion pill does not work on an ectopic pregnancy.
-
Ensure that there is a viable pregnancy. Ultrasound can confirm the presence of a viable pregnancy. If the pregnancy is not viable (no heartbeat), you should seek care from your physician, but there is no reason to take the pill.
We believe in informed consent. This means that, although we don't provide or refer for abortion, you deserve to have all the information you need to make an informed choice. This includes an ultrasound to know what is going on with your body. It also includes accurate information on the risks and side effects of the pill.
